Why padel works the whole body
A padel point is not simply an arm swinging a racket. Players repeatedly accelerate, decelerate, shuffle sideways, turn, lower their centre of mass, reach, lunge and recover their position.
Force for an effective shot can begin at the ground, travel through the legs and hips, cross the trunk and finish through the shoulder, arm and racket. This linked sequence is often called the kinetic chain.
A systematic review of padel match play describes the sport as intermittent, with repeated strokes, accelerations, decelerations and changes of direction.

Lower-body muscles used in padel
Quadriceps
The quadriceps extend the knee and help control knee flexion. In padel, they contribute when a player lowers into the ready position, moves towards a low ball, pushes out of a lunge and slows down after a short sprint.
Glutes
The gluteal muscles contribute to hip extension, lateral stability and control of the pelvis. They are involved when pushing away from the ground, changing direction, recovering from a wide ball and moving forwards towards the net.
The gluteus medius and surrounding hip muscles are particularly relevant to controlling side-to-side movement, while the gluteus maximus contributes to stronger hip extension.
Hamstrings
The hamstrings assist hip extension and knee control. They contribute during acceleration, braking, lunging and recovery movements.
Adductors
The muscles on the inside of the thigh help control the legs during lateral movement and wide reaches. Padel repeatedly asks players to move sideways, stop and return towards the centre of their court position.
Calves and ankle muscles
The calves help produce push-off force and control the ankle during small adjustment steps, split steps, accelerations and landings. They remain active during the ready position because players usually keep their weight prepared for movement rather than resting on their heels.
How the core contributes
The core is more than the visible abdominal muscles. It includes the abdominal wall, obliques, deeper trunk stabilisers and muscles around the spine and pelvis.
During padel, these muscles help:
- Keep the trunk controlled during fast direction changes.
- Transfer force between the legs and racket arm.
- Coordinate rotation during groundstrokes and overheads.
- Maintain balance while reaching outside a comfortable stance.
- Control the body after hitting the ball.
- Resist unwanted rotation when movement and racket force pull in different directions.
Padel therefore uses the abdominal and trunk muscles, but playing alone does not guarantee visible abdominal definition. Appearance also depends on genetics, total muscle development, nutrition and body composition.
Upper-body muscles used in padel
Shoulders
The deltoids help position and move the upper arm. The smaller rotator-cuff muscles contribute to controlling the shoulder joint throughout the preparation, striking and follow-through phases of a shot.
Overheads create different demands from compact volleys, so there is no single shoulder-activation pattern for every padel stroke.
Upper back
The latissimus dorsi, trapezius, rhomboids and other muscles around the shoulder blade contribute to racket movement, posture and control of the shoulder blade.
The upper back also helps decelerate the arm after a stroke rather than allowing the racket to stop abruptly.
Chest
The pectoral muscles contribute when the arm moves forwards or across the body. Their involvement changes according to the shot, contact position and swing path.
Triceps and biceps
The triceps contribute to elbow extension, particularly in strokes that accelerate the racket away from the body. The biceps and surrounding elbow muscles help control elbow position and decelerate movement.
Neither muscle works alone. Padel strokes are coordinated actions involving the shoulder, elbow, forearm, trunk and lower body.
Forearms, wrists and grip
The wrist is a joint, not a muscle. Muscles in the forearm move and stabilise the wrist, control the racket face and maintain grip.
The dominant forearm receives considerable repetitive work during a match. Gripping the racket harder than necessary can increase fatigue without automatically improving control.

Does padel work both sides equally?
Not quite. Both legs participate in movement, braking and recovery, while both sides of the trunk contribute to balance and rotation. However, the dominant arm performs most racket actions, and players may repeatedly favour particular lunges, rotations or court positions.
Research also suggests that physical and match demands can differ according to playing side and role, although findings from professional players should not automatically be applied to every recreational player.
Supplementary training should therefore include:
- Both legs
- Single-leg movements on each side
- Pulling and pushing exercises
- Rotation and anti-rotation
- Shoulder control on both sides
- Gradual loading of the dominant forearm
Normal differences between your two sides are a common feature of racket sports, not a diagnosis in themselves.
Does padel build muscle?
Padel can challenge muscular endurance, coordination and repeated-force production. A new player may also gain some strength when the sport introduces movements and loads their body has not previously experienced.
However, padel does not provide the controlled progressive overload of a resistance-training programme. If the primary goal is greater muscle size or maximal strength, structured resistance training is more reliable.
The updated 2026 American College of Sports Medicine guidance emphasises that consistently training all major muscle groups at least twice per week matters more than following a needlessly complicated plan.
The World Health Organization also recommends muscle-strengthening activity involving the major muscle groups on two or more days each week for adults.

For many healthy adults, two short full-body sessions each week are a practical starting point. Select manageable variations, move with control and progress gradually by adjusting the resistance, repetitions or exercise difficulty.
Strength work should support padel rather than leave you too fatigued to move well on court. A qualified coach or physiotherapist can adapt training to your experience, schedule, injury history and goals.
A short padel warm-up
A warm-up cannot guarantee protection from injury, but it can prepare the body for the movements that follow.
Before playing:
- Begin with a few minutes of easy movement.
- Add controlled lateral steps and changes of direction.
- Move the ankles, hips, trunk and shoulders through comfortable ranges.
- Practise small split steps and low lunges.
- Perform relaxed shadow swings.

What the research can and cannot tell you
Padel research has expanded, but most studies examine match movement, heart rate, stroke patterns, fitness tests or injuries. There is not yet enough direct padel-specific electromyography research to assign reliable activation percentages to every muscle during every shot.
A 2025 study assessed physical fitness in 30 professional players, including strength, power, speed and agility characteristics. That provides useful information about elite performance, but it does not establish exactly how much each muscle works in recreational players.
Therefore, this guide deliberately avoids:
- Invented activation percentages.
- Claims that one muscle is definitively the “most used”.
- Promises that padel prevents injuries.
- Claims that playing padel alone produces complete muscular development.
Findings in elite players are also kept separate from practical advice for recreational players.
Soreness is not the same as injury
A new or unusually demanding session can cause temporary muscle fatigue or soreness. Sharp pain, significant swelling, instability, numbness, loss of normal movement or pain that continues to worsen should not be treated as a sign that a workout was successful.

- Yes. Your abs and obliques do real work stabilising the trunk, rotating and passing force through your body. That doesn't mean weekly matches will give you visible abs. Diet and dedicated ab work do that job, not padel.
- Does padel build leg muscles?
